A plain-English guide to roll-off bin sizes in Red Deer โ what fits in a 10, 14, and 20 yard bin, measured in pickup-truck loads and real projects.
"What size bin do I need?" is the first question on every rental call, and the honest answer is that cubic yards mean nothing to most people. So forget the math for a second โ here's each size translated into pickup-truck loads and actual Red Deer projects, plus the one rule that saves people money more than any other.
The 10 yard bin โ about 3 pickup loads
The compact option. It fits a single-car garage cleanout, a bathroom gut, a deck tear-out, or a serious decluttering weekend. It's also โ counterintuitively โ the right size for most roofing jobs, because shingles are so heavy that a larger bin would hit its legal hauling weight while still half empty. Small footprint too: it leaves room on a normal driveway to still park a car.
The 14 yard bin โ about 4.5 pickup loads
Our most-rented size, and the default answer when someone describes a typical house project. A full basement renovation, a two-car garage, a kitchen gut, a rental-property turnover between tenants โ the 14 handles all of them with margin. That margin is the point: cleanouts reliably produce more than people estimate, and the 14 absorbs the surprise without needing a second haul.
The 20 yard bin โ about 6 pickup loads
The big-project workhorse. Whole-house renovations, estate clearances, hoarding cleanouts, and active construction sites live here. If you're emptying an entire property for sale or possession, start at 20 โ the alternative is usually two smaller hauls, which costs more and takes longer.
The rule that saves the most money
When you're between two sizes, go up. The price gap between sizes is small; the cost of a second delivery is not. A bin that's three-quarters full costs you nothing extra โ an overflowing one costs you a whole second haul.
Two caveats before you book
- Heavy material breaks the volume logic. Concrete, sod, dirt, and shingles are priced by weight, not looks โ for those loads, tell us the material and we'll size for the scale, not the tape measure.
- Bins must be loaded level with the rim to be legally hauled. If your mental picture involves a heaping pyramid, size up โ the excess comes off before the truck can leave.
Still torn? Describe the project on the phone โ rooms, materials, and how long it's been accumulating โ and we'll pick the size in about thirty seconds. Full sizing details and the pricing model are on the bin rental prices and sizes page, and delivery works the same for every size: we drop the bin, you load it, we haul it away.
